February 2023 - Haconby and Dyke
A dozen souls set out from the Hare and Hounds, Haconby on a cloudy, but still, morning.
Through the local churchyard, over a stile or two into grass fields heading to Morton, where a brief stop was made by the Five Bells pub. However opening time was still 15 minutes off so everyone decided to press on to Dyke. The route took in several paths and fields before the old dismantled railway track (which ran from Sleaford to Bourne) was reached and followed. A further field track and kissing gate (recently installed) were then negotiated.
The Wishing Well at Dyke, when reached, was a pleasant and relieving sight and the trekkers were eager to rest in the snug side room with their pints and halves of TT Landlord and Abbott Ale, or with a refreshing cup of coffee.
It was soon time to don coats and scarves for most of the Fen folk for the return journey, taking a shorter route via field footpaths and even more challenging stiles, before Morton then Haconby were reached.
The welcoming Hare and Hounds provided 8 Sail beers of Ploughmans Lunch and Windmill Bitter and then everyone repaired to the restaurant for Sunday roasts. Excellent food and service throughout, and thanks to Ena for organising the meal orders.
The leader of the walk was tempted to award medals for those who completed the whole route as it was a slightly more arduous trek than some of them would normally undertake !
