Campaign for Real Ale

March 2023 - Sleaford

Fenland's March walk could probably be classed as a first, and to some extent outside the principles of our CAMRA walks. We didn't start from a pub, and there was no halfway house for beer ! However Fen folk were able to relieve their thirsts at the various hostelries in Sleaford at the end of the walk.

Fifteen cats were herded together at Eastgate car park and led along the River Slea, through town, past the White Horse and the Carre Arms (no stopping before opening time) and along Mareham Lane. Past the imposing but almost derelict buildings of the Maltings in the near distance and then along farm tracks to the pedestrian rail crossing. Safely across the party marched along the single file footpath, past the Sleaford Tennis Club courts and onto Boston Road. A right and left turn took the walkers past the Hoplands and rejoined the river. A lookout was kept for kingfishers, which inhabit the Slea, but we did sight a pretty grey wagtail.

Cogglesford Watermill The waterwheel

200 year old chain hoist Miller at work

At Cogglesford Mill the trekkers were given a guided tour and which was busy milling with the water wheel in full flow. After a coffee break in the mill cafe most of the party headed for town for lunch and beer.

Some of the group enjoyed a very nice lunch and a few beers at the Barge and Bottle. The pub had Abbot, Sharps Atlantic, and Doom Bar on.
