Campaign for Real Ale

October 2014 - Uffington & Stamford

From Ye Olde Bertie Arms at Uffington to Stamford and back

Bertie Arms, Uffington Twelve members and friends all met at the Bertie,
And, as was agreed, were there by ten thirty.
Before we set out, there were treats brought by Jo.
It was nibbles and shots, and then ‘Off you go!’

Most wandered on paths, passing apples and hops,
But two of the party went off to the shops!
Some keen ones among us had time to explore
The old Lister pump. What was it for?

We walked by the river, and railway too,
Past cattle and sheep and a great deal of mud.
We laughed at the rams looking round for a mate;
We learned about reptiles and Whitefriars Gate.

The first pints were sampled – a fine choice of ales –
At ‘Tobie Norris’ in Stamford, which never fails
To offer a splendid selection of brews.
All that we needed to do was choose!

Digfield Chiff Chaff was popular there.
It won a bronze medal at Peterb’rough this year.
After sitting relaxing with lots of good crack,
The glasses were empty. ’Twas time to go back.

We arrived bang on time and we ordered our beer.
Unfortunately there was only one there –
Boltmaker (Tim Taylors), the one at the bar.
We weren’t disappointed as this was a star.

This Champion beer went down well with our food
And drinkers and staff were in happy mood.
How lucky to have such remarkable weather
And such an enjoyable get-together.
