December 2011 - Swineshead
Gathering at the Pig & Whistle in Swineshead, the 25 walkers were provided with an information sheet and a map by Rodney before setting off. Heading north the remains of a 15th century Danish settlement, known as The Manwar Ings, were clearly visible as was the young woodland near to the settlement of Baythorpe. Crossing the busy A52, the party passed the site of Swineshead Abbey where King John supposedly was taking refuge after losing his treasure in the Wash and was poisoned by a monk. Rodney and several others providing various interesting information along the route.
Whilst some of the group popped into the Wheatsheaf to sup XB, the remainder started sampling in the Pig & Whistle with Banks Mild, Hobgoblin, 8 Sail beer, London Pride, Broadside, and Skinners Betty's Big Sister (5.3%). The mild proving especially popular and moreish. Julie and Graham had provided an excellent buffet which went down well with the ales.
Jo Vamplew ran a raffle in conjunction with landlord Graham, and several locals at the Pig & Whistle won prizes of beer etc.
Thanks to Heather and Rodney for organising the walk and for raising the bar on information on places of interest.
