Campaign for Real Ale

September 2011 - Woolsthorpe

Rutland Arms, Woolsthorpe Seventeen serious striders strode out from the Rutland Arms (aka the Dirty Duck) at Woolsthorpe by Belvoir on a bright but blustery day. Led by Richard the group trooped along the Grantham canal where water wildlife was spotted including swallows and a kingfisher, and further on, a small grass snake identified by our eagle eyed ecologist. Passing by the area known as Brewer's Grave the excellent views then came into view of Belvoir Castle and the surrounding valley.

Down the hill and by the cricket field the Chequers pub was spotted where the trekkers slaked their thirsts mainly on Trip to Jerusalem, although Speckled Hen and GK IPA were also available. The Chequers is an impressive old stone building with interesting rooms and proves very popular with diners.

The return trip wound it's way along the River Devon, more a babbling brook than a river, and then crossed the bridge to rejoin the canal and then back to the Dirty Duck where Moreland Original Bitter, from the GK stable proved to be a popular selection, with Abbott and the ubiquitous IPA also on offer. The pub has a large collection of copper kettles hanging from the ceiling, a set of flying toucan (Guinness style) on the wall, an old Salters spring balance, and various other items of interest. The walkers enjoyed an excellent lunch and toasted Richard for organising the walk along with Fenland CAMRA.
