April 2011 - West Ashby & Horncastle
In brilliant sunshine the Fen trekkers and friends set off from West Ashby and spotted the first of the season's bluebells on the churchyard bank. Crossing several fields which were all very dry underfoot, mad March hares were spotted. The River Bain was then crossed which led through the picturesque Thimbleby Mill.
On reaching Horncastle several pub & beer options were available, although not immediately even though opening time was nigh. The Red Lion had its value for money Barnsley Bitter and the very quaffable Oakwell Senior; the Ship had a thirst quenching EPA (English Pale Ale) from Marstons, plus Mansfield Cask & Pedigree; the Thatch had XB & XXXB; and the the Bull with Ringwood Bitter & Pedigree. The party split for sampling, thankfully regrouping at the appointed spot in Banks Lane, and the herded cats were shepherded along the River Waring. The Viking Way was joined and following more track and field and then road the West Ashby Arms came into view.
This pub has changed quite noticeably since its closure as the Green Dragon (and Jasper the parrot) and re-opening several months ago. The accent is on wood and a continental /French feel. Beers on offer included London Pride, Black Sheep and Pedigree, all served in good condition. An excellent lunch, with plenty of options, was taken in the restaurant.
