January 2011 - Heighington & Branston
The Butcher & Beast at Heighington was the start of the walk, led off by Richard & Eric in the glorious January sunshine.
Crossing the beet field, which was being harvested that day, was a trifle sticky but the halfway house, the Waggon & Horses, at Branston was soon reached and muddy boots removed. Doom Bar, John Smiths, and the excellent light mild from Timothy Taylor, Golden Best were dispensed (served a little too cold so a short wait was required for the flavour to come through) and went down well. Drinkers were overlooked by a large moose head with antlers on the wall; also on show (well tucked away in a corner) was a large old Guinness sign, complete with Toucan. The Waggon & Horses has old framed prints showing the original pub with its Warwick Newark Ales sign. It is understood that a sister pub is in Spalding, the Plough.
The return route took in scenic paths by the beck, where a heron was spotted circling, over the railway tracks, and alongside the Jungle Conservation area.
The Butcher and Beast has several small rooms and the beers on offer were XXXB, XB, Adnams LightHouse & Broadside, plus the powerful Brew Dog Punk IPA at 6%. An excellent value for money roast lunch was taken in the intimate dining room.
Thanks to Richard & Eric for organising the walk, the pubs and the weather.
