October 2011 - Good Beer Guide Launch
Boston was the chosen venue for the launch of the Good Beer Guide 2012 with the first port of call being Moon Under Water, the local Wetherspoons that has re-emerged in the GBG after the 2009 edition. The launch coincided with Wetherspoons beer festival where the beers of the day included Everards Whakatu (3.7%), a crisp dry bitter brewed with New Zealand (topical) hops, Kalamazoo Black Silk (4%) a smooth dark brew from Bell of Michigan, Rooster's Last Stand (4.3%) with passion fruit and citrus flavours- sadly the brewers are selling up and retiring abroad, and Woodforde's Kett's Rebellion (4.3%). The usual 3 thirds measures of ale proved popular with some.
In the local launch tradition raffle tickets were given to each punter purchasing a pint of real ale, with prizes ranging from a copy of the GBG to bottles of beer and also a bottle of wine c/o the pub.
The second launch was at the Carpenters Arms where Batemans Mild, XB, and Clark's of Wakefield Classic Blonde (3.9%), a little tart to some tastes, were on. Again raffle tickets were dispensed to real ale purchasers (the majority of drinkers in the Carpenters) and prizes distributed to ticket winners, and the remaining GBGs sold.
Some members decided to explore by the Sluice Bridge and popped into the Witham Tavern, recently re-opened as a freehouse, and were pleasantly surprised to be served Hobgoblin, which was in very good condition. Details of opening times were noted: Mon closed, Tues-Fri 12-2, 6-10.30, Sat 12-10.30, Sun 12- close.
