May 2015 - Old Bolingbroke
A baker’s dozen set off from the Black Horse at Old Bolingbroke but not before John had secured his trusty steed to a post – well the man had cycled 30 miles from Sleaford and was bang on time. After the photo shoot in front of the pub, taken by one of the OB joggers / striders, the party set off and were soon wending their way up a steep grassed field. Pausing for breath and a good excuse to look at the grand views across the Wolds the trekkers were soon crossing fields and bridges across streams and down tracks to a minor road. Stiles, fields and tracks then led up to West Keal Church where another short break was taken and views across to Boston and the Stump were clear, and the Norfolk coast and Hunstanton were a hazy blur.
As well as lambs, bluebells and other wild flowers spotted en-route a young grass snake was seen basking in the sun in the middle of the road so it was safely ushered to the grass verge. On then back to OB via narrow lanes and past old mill stones and the old water mill.
On return to the Black Horse pints of Wentworth Challenge, Best Bar None, Milestone Anniversary and Youngs Bitter dispensed by Gennie were thirstily downed before huge portions of fresh Grimsby fish and chips, cooked by Nigel, were tucked into.
