July 2015 - Sleaford
July's Fenland walk was one especially to celebrate a certain birthday for Jo. The group assembled in Jo and Richard's garden, appropriately enough in front of the "beer shack" for the photocall.
The drizzly rain did not deter as Richard led off the troupe down the road, past the site of Sleaford Castle, along West Banks by the Slea then northwards along woodland paths where the flora and fauna brigade spotted various species of interest. The Jolly Scotchman at Holdingham was reached, in sunshine, at opening time where Greene King offered up their range of IPA, Abbot, Golden Hen and Churchill (4.2%).
After a leisurely interlude the trekkers set off for the town, making faster progress than the traffic which had been held up by Sleaford Carnival. A pleasant stroll through the cemetery followed and then Cogglesford Mill where Malcolm greeted us complete with miller's attire, and the various stages of milling and mill floors were explored.
A stroll along the River Slea ( trout spotted) back to town then into the Beer and Bean where XB, XXXB, and Theakstons Crime of Passion at 4.2% (celebrating the Old Peculier Crime Writers Festival), were downed with gusto.
Back at Jo and Richard's Pheasantry Dark and Tank Ale (celebrating Lincoln Tank manufacture) were in top condition until the last drop, with donations going to the British Legion, and a delicious lunch being taken in the garden. An excellent walk, in summery weather, with tasty ales and food, and grand company. A fitting celebration of Jo's birthday. Thanks to both Jo and Richard.
£131.00 was raised for the Royal British Legion, a big thank you for the donations, and thanks acknowledged from the RBL.
