March 2017 - Holbeach
Fenland's walks over the last 15 years or so have mainly managed to avoid wet Sundays, however these last few months seem to have reversed that trend.
No matter, the slight showers were less than forecast and didn't put off the XV from fielding a team and stepping out in Holbeach. The team photo provided a sporting opportunity and a change from the usual pub backdrop and Ivan was soon leading the players into town and then over soggy field tracks. Eventually suburban streets and avenues were reached, and as well as daffodils, the eagle eyed botanists spotted whitlow grass with its tiny white flowers - apparently a bit of a rarity in urban areas.
After some map checking the trekkers were led back to town and soon found refuge in the Crown, which was full and busy dispensing Hobgoblin and GK IPA. The lunchers then lurched across to the Horse and Groom where Adnams Southwold and Doom Bar awaited, as did Sunday roasts with multi veg. It was good to welcome Heather back after her multi-months sojourn in native NZ, and she had also persuaded Miranda and Tui to join us in the delights of this Holbeach hike.
Thanks to Ivan and Nigel for organising the walk and meal.
