October 2017 - Old Leake & Wrangle
On 8th October 15 members and guests set off for a five mile walk from The Bricklayers Arms at Old Leake. The walk was initially via metalled minor roads heading South towards the coast. The weather proved very kind, the previous day’s rain and heavy wind having abated. The leader set off, walking past the The Moat House (which looked very impressive) before turning left towards Old Leake Hurn’s End but then soon turning North again onto Market Lane. We didn’t see a stall, covered or uncovered, but the fields were full of Lincolnshire vegetables of high quality and variety! We next turned right towards Hall End. The Hall looked smart but it was relatively modern, not medieval.
We next travelled off towards Wrangle, with our half way house the Angel. When this was recc’ed they were serving Bateman’s XB and Sharp’s Atlantic & Doombar, however sadly on the visit day only Doombar was ready for serving, much to the disappointment of several members. This did rather truncate the halfway pitstop and we soon resumed the walk, visiting the lovely church and churchyard at Wrangle for a brief wander, before moving onto rural footpaths en-route to the Bricklayers two miles away.
The Bricklayers Arms’ Bateman’s was well on form and the Landlord was very kind to let us start our carvery a little earlier than booked. The carvery itself was a choice of four beautifully cooked roasts and a large selection of seasonal fresh vegetables, enjoyed by everyone. So filling that only two ramblers could manage desserts! The premises are very smart and clean. Well recommended for a visit.
