May 2018 - Kirkby on Bain
As the Ebrington Arms at Kirkby on Bain had gained the high accolade of Fenland's Pub of the Year for 2018 it seemed natural to have our May walk from there.
19 walkers with boots, sandals, raincoats, and hats set off on a cloudy morning led by Ivan and Nigel. Across footpaths and field tracks, over the River Bain and into the hamlet of Haltham. The Marmion Arms building still stands, somewhat forlornly, but unfortunately no longer a pub. The plane parked in the private car park no longer flies - a message for us all there ! On then past bungalows of note, onto public footpaths and grassed fields to the River Bain which was followed, passing curious cows and the odd bull - none of which gave the trekkers trouble !
Back then to the now sunny Ebrington Arms, where a fine array of real ales awaited. The Timothy Taylor Spring Knowle was quickly changed as it had reached end of barrel. The Yeast Coast Blonde proved very popular, along with the Thornbridge California Sun. For those sampling more familiar brews the XB, TT Landlord and the Adnams Broadside were also in fine form, and all dispensed exquisitely by Sophie and staff.
After an excellent lunch in the dining room Fenland folk returned to the bar where Sophie and Cathy Moncrieff, surrounded by their staff, were presented with their POTY certificate by Chairman Nigel, who also passed on to them a copy of the 2018 GBG, as the pub's copy had "disappeared" some time ago.
Thanks to Liz and Ivan, Ena and Nigel for organising the walk and lunches. An excellent day out for all.
